With the blue thread of the river by which we grew up.
The green smear of the woods we first made love in.
The yellow city we thought was our future.
The red highways not traveled, the green ones with their missed exits,
the black side roads which took us where we had not meant to go.

Locating Our Lives, Discovering Holy Ground
Maps as Landscape of Body, Soul and Story
Saturday, August 13 9:00am - 3:00pm (in person)
Remember paper maps? Remember the sound of them unfolding? You shaking them so the crease would flatten out? Remember your finger moving across the paper trying to locate where you were, and tracing the distance between where you were going? Remember trying to refolding them into a some semblance of order?
They were works of art, the labor of cartographers who attempted to make sense of a big picture so that we might find our way. The same can be said of our outer and inner lives.
Paper maps will serve as the medium that will guide our conversation and inspire creative exploration, as we trace the landscapes of our lives, searching for those landmarks we might call “sacred.”
The purpose of this workshop is to provide spaciousness to reflect on the bigger picture of your life, as well as the present moment in which you are located. There is space, too, to ponder as-yet-unknown roads and the dream of Home.
You might want to simply journal, write, prayer walk or make art as part of this time. Art supplies and writing journals will be available, and you are welcome to bring your preferred materials.
Schedule for the Day:
Facilitator: Susannah Crolius
9:00-9:45: Gathering: Welcome, Community Building, Maps as Metaphor for Our Inner/Outer Life
9:55-10:55: Wandering
“A map has no vocabulary, no lexicon of precise meanings. It communicates in lines, hues, tones, coded symbols, and empty spaces, much like music. Nor does a map have its own voice. It is many-tongued, a chorus reciting centuries of accumulated knowledge in echoed chants. A map provides no answers. It only suggests where to look..."
― Miles Harvey, The Island of Lost Maps: A True Story of Cartographic Crime
Leave the GPS at home and let yourself wander freely through the stories of your life as different kinds of maps.
10:55 - 11:00: Bathroom/Stretch Break
11:00-11:55: Here.Now.
"A map does not just chart, it unlocks and formulates meaning; it forms bridges between here and there, between disparate ideas that we did not know were previously connected.”
― Reif Larsen
From all the stories, a story that waits to be explored will emerge. You are invited to work with it creatively or contemplatively in some way.
12:00 - 12:45: Lunch
A delicious Mediterranean lunch will be provided or you are welcome to bring your own food.
12:45 - 1:15: Further Thoughts on Here. Now.
Maybe some other thought on you/here/now has emerged over lunch. This is a bit more time to finish a piece or ponder some other aspect of your current location.
1:15-1:20: Bathroom/Stretch break
1:20 - 2:00 Follow the Yellow Brick Road: Seeking Home
Talk to them,
listen to them. They are alive poems.
Remember the wind. Remember her voice. She knows the
origin of this universe.
Remember you are all people and all people
are you.
Remember you are this universe and this
universe is you.
Remember all is in motion, is growing, is you. (Joy Harjo)
2:00 -2:45: Sharing and Wrapping Up
Space is limited to 6 participants. Please pre-register by Friday, August 5 or for questions: artandsoul.wm@gmail.com.
Cost is on a sliding scale: $50-90, includes Mediterranean lunch and all art supplies. If this gathering really speaks to you and the cost is prohibitive, let's chat. Payment is due by the start of the workshop. Options include Venmo, Paypal, check or cash.
