You will be walking some night
in the comfortable dark of your yard
and suddenly a great light will shine
round about you, and behind you
will be a wall you never saw before.
It will be clear to you suddenly
that you were about to escape,
and that you are guilty: you misread
the complex instructions, you are not
a member, you lost your card
or never had one. And you will know
that they have been there all along,
their eyes on your letters and books,
their hands in your pockets,
their ears wired to your bed.
Though you have done nothing shameful,
they will want you to be ashamed.
They will want you to kneel and weep
and say you should have been like them.

It is only candor that is aloof from them,
only an inward clarity, unashamed,
that they cannot reach. Be ready.
When their light has picked you out
and their questions are asked, say to them:
"I am not ashamed."

Special Friday Art Wind Down for This Friday,
October 5, 2018

in anticipation of the Supreme Court nomination decision occurring this week
2:30 - 5:30pm
@First Churches, 129 Main Street, Northampton, MA (enter on Center Street)

Please note: This special event is open to persons who identify as women, queer, trans, or non-binary.

This Friday, time set aside for you... to honor and to share the multitude of feelings the Supreme Court nomination process is surfacing for us.

  • Susannah and Rev. Sarah Buteux, co-pastor of First Churches, will be your hosts for the afternoon.
  • Creative time will be between 2:30 and 4:30.  At 4:30 we will gather to share our reflections and any creative work you wish to share.
  • For those needing quiet, uninterrupted space, The Nest art/spirit space will be open for writing, art-making or stillness. Consider expressing yourself through a visual affirmation, soul pechakucha, or word + image poetry, using words from courageous women (provided). Susannah or Sarah will be glad to work with you on these or your own idea.
  • Beautiful Lyman Hall will be open, with live music from Su Eaton for movement or meditation, there will be warm, delicious comfort food to nosh and we will read together words from women who are inspiring us through these days. Feel free to bring your favorite comfort food to share.

While Art Wind Down is always drop-in as your schedule allows, we hope that this Friday you will be able to be with us for the whole afternoon.  An as-generous-as-you-are-able monetary donation for art supplies, music and food would be most appreciated for this event.    Please share this event widely with your friends.
