"It doesn't have to be the blue iris, it could be
weeds in a vacant lot, or a few small stones;
just pay attention, then patch a few words together and don't try to make them elaborate, this isn't
a contest but the doorway into thanks, and a silence in which another voice may speak."

Mary Oliver

Welcome to Art & Soul...

There are many ways of knowing.  We speak multiple languages.
The soul speaks a unique language: of depth, longing, belonging,
meaning, values, identity, ideas, beauty.

The relationship between Creativity and Spirituality is as ancient as we are. Think drawings on cave walls.  Think music. Singing. Dancing.  Storytelling. Poetry. The spoken rhythms of sacred texts. Great works of art.  Drama.

What if we were to consider the possibility that a one way we can encounter the sacred is through the process of contemplative and creative expression: through color, image, sound, silence, touch, listening, talking together?   I call it Sensory Divina, or "divine sensing."

The arts teach about mystery. They give us room to live in places of paradox in our lives. It is through the creative process that we come to know ourselves more deeply and invite space to discover, receive and express our own voices and the voices of others.  Art making slows us down, asks us to see more deeply with "graced vision." Art, then, is mediator of the sacred, a doorway, a threshold into the ultimate Mystery.  Creativity enlarges our capacity to see the holy at work in the world.

This is the invitation Art & Soul offers.  First, space is created to breathe, open, release. Then, through a wide variety of art materials and ways of engagement, the process unfolds.  My toolbox of ideas, resources and creative engagement is large: rituals, practices, wisdom, experiences that come from diverse sources--spiritual traditions and contemplative practices, culture, stories and poetry, film, vintage objects, nature and natural things...Join me in being surprised, delighted, moved, awed, changed, graced.
