"the root of the word remember means to make whole again, to bring the parts back together." (Christine Valters Paintner)
Re-Membrance: an informal writing circle for calling forth the stories that wait to be be told
Thursdays, 7:00-8:15pm, April 8 through June 24 via ZOOM This is an open circle; join us on the days you can and wish to
Let me say up front that the purpose of this circle is purely self-motivated. I both want to carve out time to discover/rediscover/connect with/reconnect with what I call my "holy stories," those memories, moments, thresholds, doorways, for better, for worse, and everywhere in-between, that have shaped who I am over the course of my life. They could be remembrances of a great day with your beloved, the way the light looked on the water as you paddled across the lake that afternoon, the sound of the wood crackling in the fire and the chill that was in the air, the call you got from the hospital, the feeling of the lump in your throat when you heard the news. Within us, there is an endless reservoir of memories.
I trust there are others, too, who would find it useful to have a consistent weekly time in which to write alone, yet together via ZOOM. This circle is not memoir writing, not "storytelling" in the tradition sense, but simply an invitation to range freely through the hallways of memory each week and encounter a story, a moment, an event, that wants--or needs--some attention.
Our time together is brief: we begin with a small invocation of sorts to call forth the ghosts, so to speak, to open a window so the fresh air can get in, and then with the words "I remember..." we write alone, but together, for an hour. At the end, those who wish to will share only the first line of what they have written, leaving space for the memory to breathe, we will offer a blessing and close the circle.
