Do you have a body? Don't sit on the porch! Go out and walk in the rain! If you are in love, then why are you asleep? Wake up, wake up! You have slept millions and millions of years. Why not wake up this morning? (Kabir)
ILLUMINATED: A Book of Hours 7 Sundays,11:30am-1:30pm February 23, March 1,8,15,22,29, April 5
Illuminated manuscripts have their roots in the Middle Ages. Often simple, sometimes elaborate, these pages were acts of devotion, taking favorite texts and embellishing them, often with borders and beautiful lettering. A Book of Hours was a common type of illuminated manuscript, a spiritual practice of paying attention to the gifts of time given in each day. "Praying the Hours" is a central practice of the contemplative or monastic life.
For seven Sundays, you are invited to give homage to the sacred rhythm of your day, being fully present to them, noticing how the ordinary is indeed extraordinary. Each week a new hour of the day will be illuminated, yielding the creation of your own Book of Hours at the end of the series.
February 23: Vigils (Night) March 1: Lauds (Dawn) March 8: Terce (Morning) March 15: Sext (Noon) March 22: None (Mid-Afternoon) March 29: Vespers (Evening) April 5: Compline (Night)
You do not need to be "artistic" to find this practice meaningful. Your pages can be as simple or as embellished as you want. I will provide medieval border templates, images, stencils and stamps; you bring quotes, poems, words that delight you.
